My biggest dog training accomplishment has been training my coonhound, Miley, to be a service dog. When I told people that I was going to train her to be a service dog they pointed and laughed, scoffed and said that I couldn't train a coonhound to do that and flat out told me it was impossible. Miley's previous foster mom said that there was no bloody way that Miley would EVER be a service dog because she was too wild and crazy. When I got her, she was HIGHLY reactive and bayed at anything that moved, including leaves gently blowing across the sidewalk. She would try to pull my arm out of my shoulder socket while on a leash. During our first walk together, it was like trying to walk a drunken ball of ADHD with a side of flying monkeys. A five minute walk was exhilarating for her but exhausting for me. She passed her service dog test with flying colors in May of 2022.
